This is, in the words of Heywood Banks, "The one-eye love". Eat
your heart out, Ripley and P.T. Barnum. In 1974, while working as a veterinary
technologist in Texas, I assisted in a ceasarian operation on a queen cat. The
kittens were full term, and as I suctioned each one to stimulate breathing, all
were normal except this one. Having survived via its umbilical cord, at first,
because of haste, I couldn't see why this writhing kitten failed to open its
mouth and breathe. The shock came when I realized that this kitten had no mouth,
nor nose - the only facial feature was one large eye centered on its face.
I have heard of and seen birth abnormalities such as two faces among kittens,
but this is the only true cyclopean specimen I have any knowledge of in any
species, and it is full term and in excellent condition. I embalmed this
specimen, and the offers I have had to sell it have reached $2,000, as a freak
show can reap admissions from such a rare and authentic specimen.
My reserve of $1,000 is half that amount. This is a once in a lifetime chance
to own a real unique oddity for those interested in pathology, biology,
medicine, or really weird curios.
